Lt. Col. Richard E. Hyman

Lieutenant Colonel Richard E. Hyman, 101, Of Galveston passed into eternity at his home early Tuesday, January 11, 2022.

Born February 1, 1920, in southern Cass County to George A. and Ina A. (Shanks) Hyman.  He married Mary Frances Lantz on March 8, 1942, in Elwood, Indiana and she preceded him in death on January 13, 2009.

Dick graduated from Young America High School in 1938.  He then went on to attend Ball State University and Purdue University majoring in Agriculture until he was drafted.  He joined the US Army Air Corp and graduated from pilot training in 1942.  He served in Africa, Europe and the South Pacific during World War 2.   He traveled to Guam in 1946 where he was joined by his family.  In 1952 he and his family were stationed in Okinawa during the Korean War.   In 1954 he and his family returned to Lincoln, Nebraska.  In 1959 he transferred to Grissom Air Force base where he served as the 305th Bombing Wing Weapons Officer.  Dick had the opportunity to land on 6 of the 7 continents, Australia being the only continent he did not land on during his time in the Military.  He also has been to all the US states except for Alaska. Dick retired from the US Air Force in December of 1965 as a Lieutenant Colonel and Command Pilot.

Dick was a lifetime member of the Center Evangelical United Brethren Church which later became Center United Methodist Church.  He served as trustee and Sunday school teacher at his church.  He was a member of the American Legion Post #418 in Walton and served on the Southeastern School Board for seven years during the time of the consolidation and construction of Lewis Cass High School and Thompson Elementary School in Walton.   He was also a member of the National Association of Military Personnel.  He enjoyed hunting, fishing, mushroom hunting, playing cards and cutting wood. 

Surviving family include his children, Karen Sue Eno and husband Charles, Wausau, WI; William J. Hyman and wife Susie, Greenwood, IN; Richard E. Hyman Jr. and wife Debbie, Galveston, IN; grandchildren, Debra, Joyce, Chuckie, Mike, Chris, Jaclyn and Brittany, 10 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren.   He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Mary Frances, granddaughter Laura Koenig, and siblings, George (Lucille) Hyman Jr., Robert (Lois) Hyman, Phillip (Carol) Hyman, Maurine (Earl) Miller, Betty (Harold) Stafford, Vivian (Lloyd) Toney, Georgina (Phillip Bone and an infant brother, Steward Hyman.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 15, 2022, at Center United Methodist Church with Rev. John Newman officiating.  Burial will follow Center UB Cemetery with military honors.  Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. until service time at 1:00 p.m. Saturday at the Church.  A funeral meal will be provided at the church immediately following services.
